It isn’t an ‘easier’ route, but has shorter treks on the first 3 days and therefore more relaxed, offering good acclimatisation. Through forest, the trail climbs up to Mawenzi tarn, Then across the barren landscape of ‘The Saddle’ to base camp at Kibo. it’s a tough but spectacularly rewarding ascent up to the summit via Gillman’s & Stella Point where we will feel on top of the world!

Rongai’s ascent profile is very similar to that of Marangu. It is one of Kilimanjaro’s easier routes. The climb to the top is gradual and steady. However, unlike Marangu, this route has low crowds and passes through remote wilderness areas.

Having crossed the plateau and reached the foot of Kibo at Lava Tower, you then have two choices: the longer and easier Barafu Route that takes you round the southern side of Kibo; or the Western Breach Route via Arrow Glacier and the Crater Camp. As such, the walk could last as many as eight days if taking the Barafu Route and extra overnight stops on the plateau and in the Karanga Valley are taken – if not, seven days is more likely.

Due to its rapid gain in altitude the first two days, it is one of the toughest and riskiest Kilimanjaro routes. Climbers are rewarded with rare and stunning views, fewer people, and shorter distances. Plus, you will enjoy seeing the surprised look on the faces of locals when you tell them that you ascended via the Umbwe route. This route traditionally joined the Western Breach route to the summit, but due to recent rockfalls and dangers on the Western Breach, our Umbwe route meets up with the Machame and Lemosho routes at Barranco Camp.

The extra day used on the seven day climb makes it much easier than the six day climb – offering a better chance of success. We ensure you are looked after by a large team while climbing Kilimanjaro, including a chief guide, an assistant guide, a cook and porters. You camp throughout the trip using the level of equipment which suits you.
